We oversleep today. Departing time was 9:30AM.
One more gravel stretch and we did the Cassier Hwy. We were happy.
At the end of the highway, when it meets the Alaskan Hwy, we met 2 guys from
Indiana; each one on their own trickle. They were going to Fairbanks too,
but they were a little slow for us to follow, so we kept going.
The night before I realized that the tickets I had bough for the ferry between
Skagway and Haines were for 9:45PM and not 9:45AM, so I decided to go straight
to Whitehorse.
The Alaskan Highway is not a good road. Lots of holes and gravel, but it
had trees on the side of the road that kept the animals away from it making
it safer. We crossed the Continental Divide here.
Lunchtime was at Anne's Salmon Bake but wasn't good. We had much better fish
down in California.
We arrive at Whitehorse around 5:30PM and after securing campsite we went
to see a follies show, very good at $20. And stay at a Hi Country RV Park
camping. Another excellent choice at $12.50 This town is
the capital of the Yukon Territory and it is a very cute one, with sidewalks
by the Yukon River, many choices of places to eat, including our favorite
one "Tim Horton", which has a delicious croissant and great bagels.
We also took pictures by the S.S. Klondike, a 1937 sternwheeler also located
by the Yukon River, which use to transport gold during the gold rush times.
Here the sunset was 11:00pm and was pretty light all night long, so Eliane
had some trouble trying to sleep. Also, it was cold, getting down to
40F in the middle of the night. But our camping gear did a good job
keeping us
warm.
During the day the temperature range was 56F to 78F.

This
was the worst road so far (we will get even worst ahead)
|
 |
for
may first time on this king of loose gravel with potholes I was riding
below 35mph and this guy on his GS pass me pretty easy |
 |
But
as soon as we got compact gravel, I got close to him again. |
