Day 17
From Glacier National Park to Cody, WY
Today's stats:
Miles rode = 602 average moving = 56MPH
Stops for Gas = 1 only = G41 on the map
Moving time = 10:30h - Total time = 13:00H
Average MPH = 44
Today's total cost = $142
We woke up early today, and about 6:30AM we were at the Glacier Park north
(east ?) entrance. We crossed the park east to west and then just turned
back from Highway 2, going east again. It's a big loop, but the ride inside
the park was worth it.
There were a few miles under construction inside the park, so be prepared
for some delays. Because we were there early, we passed some of the constructions
before the crew got there, and the other ones were quick. The park busses
weren't riding yet. The park busses are a good way to visit the park too
and they start moving at 8:30AM.
Our first close call with dear happened today at the exit of Glacier National
Park. One just jumped in front of our motorcycle and stopped right there.
We were riding at about 40MPH and I grabbed the brakes as hard as I could.
Thank you to the ABS and the bike stopped right in front of the dear. I mean,
few more inches and I would have hit the dear. Then, after the bike stopped,
the dear moved away. Those animals are really stupid...
Then after riding back from Highway 2 we merged onto Highway 89 which crosses
USA from South to North all the way from Arizona to Montana. It's a very
scenic highway and I would recommend you to ride it if you have a chance.
We did a cut across to I-15, just because we were in a hurry to get to Yellowstone.
We had no reservations and I would like to get to the park as early as possible.
After Great Falls I got Highway 89 again and about 4:30PM we were at the
Yellowstone North Entrance. The ranger told us that would be hard to find
campsite because the park was completely full and he was right. We went to
all campsites that accepted tents and they were full. So after riding inside
the park for about 2 hours we kept going towards Cody.
The East entrance (exit) of the park is under a major construction and took
forever for us to ride just a few miles. A lot of dust and rocks and holes
in a dirt road, with a pilot car.
Passing that we had our dinner at Pahaska right after the park entrance (really
bad food, more like a tourist trap place) and we arrived at Cody about 8:00PM.
Got a hotel this night. We were coming from 2 long days riding, with lots
of detours and stop and go, so we decided to stay in a motel.
Temperature
today was 51F to 70F
