Zumo Installation on a K1200LTZumo Installation on a K1200LT

March 2007

This is a photo essay on my Garmin Zumo installation on my K1200LT.

I decide to install it on top of the radio, using the GPS support that is available for the new 2005 and up models.

This are the parts I bought:

Garmin Zumo - I will be using it on my both bikes: LT and GS
010-10859-00 Motorcycle mounting bracket (replacement) $85.00
010-10861-00 Motorcycle power cable (replacement) $21.50

Then from BMW I bought:
71 60 7684368 Carrier $21.00
71 60 7685289 Support Plate $10.00
07 11 9905170 Nut $0.75 (times 4)
72 60 7687735 Bolt $075 (times 4)
46 63 7677604 Screw $1.00 (times 4)

You won't need the expensive ($120plus) plate that goes on top of the carrier.

First think I removed both upper sides of the tupperware

Then removed the radio sting and radio up to the radio display. (pretty much everything). Sounds a bid deal, but took about 1:30h. to remove it to this photo:

Note the BMW plate that goes under the lip. Bottom view:

That plate will help you to be the guide for the 4 holes you need to drill on the lip.

OK. I'm NOT GOOD DREALING... must be something on the genes... I'm sure you hare much better then I and will make 4 perfect holes...

Now, just fix the support on top of the lip. The plate on the other side.

Radio assembly

This is the view from the bottom of the radio stingray. Note that you have to have some kind of sealant to 're glue' the radio holder plastic.

Word of advice: Wait couple hours after you re-glue the radio plate... I was too fast and it unglue and I have to redo again.

Then I realized that if you use the 4 holes to fix your Zumo, it will be covering the radio display, and almost touching the top radio buttons. I decided to install my using only the top 2 holes. I will try to find some one who can make me a thin aluminum plate to make an extension for this setup. Something with about 6" tall, and 6 holes. Then you fix the bottom on the BMW cradle, the middle on the Garmin+BMW cradle and the top on the Gramin cradle.

Then I bought a 3.5mm stereo pin to pin cable at Radio shack and connect it to BMW Comm system.
You will not be able to control volume using the bike volume button with this setup. If you have a better idea, let me know OK!.

Routing the cables is an issue. I don't like they 'floating' around the cradle and I will come up with a better solution

The lamp hole on the top of the panel will be filled with a new lamp+housing (be prepared: $15 for the bulb... insane...). The old Garmin BMW GPS SPIII color was there before.

The Zumo is being powered by the previous BMW GPS installation, but you can run cables up to your battery and and if ON all the time.

On my GS I let it be on all the time. At LT it is On only when the key is on.

I didn't connect the phone cable (mic) since I have it from the BMW Comm system.

The whole installation took about 4 hours, because I'm slow and had to re-do couple steps. (re-gluing the radio panel and re-soling a cable that I did bad the first time.)
